Over-exertion during sex may lead to temporary amnesia

October 13, 2011 - London

Scientists have warned that over-exertion during sex can wipe out one's memory, a rare condition called "transient global Amnesia".

According to Livescience, the scientists site the case of a woman who had sex and then lost recollection of the past 24 hours, to validate their argument.

A 54-year-old woman arrived at a hospital in Washington DC in a state of panic because she'd just been intimate with her husband and immediately lost all recollection of the previous 24 hours and her brain scans at Georgetown University Hospital showed no sings of any damage to the brain.

Although "transient global Amnesia" is always temporary and the brain doesn't suffer any harm, yet it can be very distressing because it's very severe, it can be very distressing.

Some doctors believe that misfiring valves in the neck may be the cause of the Amnesia as instead of closing shut, they are remaining open to allow pressure in the stomach to push oxygen-poor blood that should be seeping downwards to the heart, back up through the jugular veins and in to the part of the brain that controls memories.

"We don't know very much about the cause. It causes a lot of alarm, but this is not a stroke or an event that causes damage to the brain. It's almost always very benign," the Daily Mail quoted Sebastian Ameriso, as saying.
