Gene offers potential target for cancer therapy

A professor at the General Hospital of the Chinese Peoples Armed Police Forces has revealed that inhibiting a gene called NHE-1 in gastric cancer cells can induce acidification within the cell, and trigger the process of apoptosis wherein tumour cells die on their own.

Washington, May 21 : A professor at the General Hospital of the Chinese People's Armed Police Forces has revealed that inhibiting a gene called NHE-1 in gastric cancer cells can induce acidification within the cell, and trigger the process of apoptosis wherein tumour cells die on their own.

Professor Hai-Feng Liu points out in a research article in the World Journal of Gastroenterology that previous studies have already implicated the higher expression level of NHE1 in genesis and progression of tumours, suggesting that this protein could be treated as a target in treatment of tumours.

The examination of the effect of inhibiting NHE1 on tumour survival is being seen as an interesting peace of research.

The research article says that this study may be useful in clearly understanding what NHE1 is.

However, the article also says that further research needs to be done on gene therapy for gastric carcinomas.
