According to a fact sheet, the 1 billion milestone came at 12:45 p.m. PT on 14 September 2012. Facebook has 1.13 trillion Likes, 1040.3 billion friend connections, 219 billion photos uploaded, 17 billion location-tagged posts and 62.6 million songs played 22 billion times.
India
A number of Internet users in India are on Facebook. Celebrities including Amitabh Bachchan, Sachin Tendulkar and Salman Khan have their pages on Facebook and regularly interacts with their fans.
Acquisitions
Facebook purchased 650 technology patents from Microsoft for 550 million dollars. 750 patents from IBM were purchased in March 2012.
In 2012, Facebook has acquired mobile photo-sharing app Instagram. The deal was $300 million and 23 million shares and was meant to have closed in the second quarter of 2012. However, the US regulators gave its approval in August. The deal was finally closed on August 31, 2012.
Change in TOS and Privacy Policy
Instagram has announced that it is updating its terms of service and privacy policy which will be effective on January 16, 2013. The change is to bring its TOS and privacy policy in line with Facebook's policies after it was acquired by the later. The change also gives right to Instagram to sell images and data uploaded to the site to third parties without the uploader's consent and without having to pay the uploader. The announcement sparked off protests from users.

Facebook Messenger
Facebook Messenger is a service provided by Facebook on its website as well as a stand alone application for its users. Facebook allows users to interact with each other by sending and receiving messages on the Facebook messenger.
In December 2012, Facebook has enabled users to create a Facebook messenger account without a Facebook account. The new feature will allow users to use Facebook messenger with a new and a phone number. The new feature is enabled on Facebook's Messenger app for Android and is expected to rolled out soon to other platforms.

The option is available under 'Life Event' where in users can post to their timeliness on where and why they are voting. The new feature is made available as the 2012 presidential election is just about a month away.
