Hampi Express Train Accident 2012

The Hampi Express from Hubli to Bangalore collided on its way with a stationary goods train at the Penukonda station in Anantapur district early in the morning. Initial reports suggest at least 16 persons killed and several others injured in the mishap. Railway Minister Mukul Roy has immediately ordered an inquiry into the accident. The accident happened on May 22, 2012 between 3:15 am and 3:45 am early in the morning.


Three bogies of the Hampi Express got derailed. The accident resulted in the first two compartments of the train catching fire and trapping many passengers in the coach. There was a short circuit in the first compartment. The driver on seeing hte goods train applied the emergency breaks which caused the derailment. Firefighters immediately sprung into action and extinguished the flames.

Several trains in Andhra Pradesh were running late. Trains from Mumbai to Bangalore, Machilipatnam to Yeshwantapur and Bhagalpur to Yashwantapur lines were affected by the accident and have been delayed at least 3 hours.

Death Toll

The death toll rose to 16 and 25 were injured in the accident. The officials fear that the death toll may increase. The Railway ministry has announced compensation to the families of those who died in the accident.

Cause of the Accident

The Railway DRM Tej Singh Paul told the media that the accident happened due to the fault of signaling. He also said that the Railway driver may not be cautious.

Relief Measures

The Railway Police, Firefighters and Revenue officials sprung into action immediately after the accident for relief measures. The firefighters contained the fire. The injured were taken to the nearby hospitals. 70 people were rescued from the derailed coaches so far. 15 were admitted in the Penukonda hospital and 10 at the Hindupur hospital for treatment.

Karnataka Government announces Compensation

The Karnataka State Government has also announced compensation to the victims of the accident. Chief Minister Sadananda Goud while expressing grief on the accident, said that the government will pay Rs. 1 lakh to the families of those who were deceased in the accident. Rs. 25,000 will be paid as compensation to the injured. The Chief Minister sent a team led by Textiles Minister Varthur Prakash to oversee the relief operations.

Ministers N Raghuveera Reddy, Sailajanath and Rajya Sabha member K Chiranjeevi reached the accident spot and are monitoring the relief efforts. They consoled the victims of the accident. Chief Minister Kiran Kumar Reddy will reach the spot at 12:30 in the afternoon.

Compensation Announced

Railway Minister Mukul Roy is reportedly on his way to the accident spot. A compensation of Rs. 5 lakh for the dead and Rs. 1 lakh for those who were injured grievously was announced by the Railway Ministry. Those who suffered simple injuries will be compensated with Rs. 50,000.

Telugu Desam Party MPs have demanded a compensation of Rs. 10 lakh to the victims of the Hubli Express train accident. The MPs raised slogans in the Lok Sabha demanding the government to increase the already announced compensation. The session was adjourned till 12 pm.
