Homophobic tweet and its after effects - September 2010

In September 2010, she made a homophobic tweet over the Wallabies victory over South Africa. She later apologized for her act. The tweet had led her to loose the sponsorship of Jaguar. Rice broke into tears as she again made a public apology for her homophobic slur on Twitter. May be, this has led her underwear sponsor to stay with her. Australian diver Matthew Mitcham came to the defence of Rice for her anti-gay comments, saying that the swimmer is not homophobic in any sense. A prominent gay rights activist has said that even though Rice's anti-gay slur on Twitter was offensive, it did not warrant the hysterical reaction it got.

Swimming career

In January 09, Aussie swimming coach Michael Bohl said she is pretty unfit after staying away from the pool for nine weeks. Despite this, she was spotted partying hard in Sydney yet again.

In March 09 Rice is was confined to looking at her shoulder injury to make certain that it doesnt worsen.

In March 2010, she booked a place at the 2010 Commonwealth Games to be held in New Delhi when she hit top form by upsetting former world champion Jess Schipper in the 100m at the selection trials in Sydney. However, she said she would have to rethink about going to India for the Games, if there was any serious or credible risk. She broke into tears when she announced her withdrawal from the Commonwealth Games due to a shoulder injury.


Rice signs for underwear brand Davenport which saw a 48 percent increase in sales since signing Rice on lucrative sponsorship deals. The glamour girl generated $3.2 million worth of media coverage for the brand since her signing in June. Experts said in August 08 that she will may make up to 450,000 dollars per sponsorship deal.

In January 09, Rice is reported to hhave stripped to their underwears for a new string of advertisements.

Television appearance

After her spectacular successes in swimming championships, golden girl Rice began to try her luck with TV shows. Rice signed a two year contract with Channel Seven for which she would get paid 800,000 dollars. Seven is also said to have paid other athletes not to appear on the program. She appears in the Make Me a Supermodel show. Rice also appears on Channel Nine 60 minute Olympics special. She however said she has no dreams to become a reality TV star.

In September 2010, she was been dropped by Channel 7, after the broadcaster opted not to renew its big-budget two-year partnership with her.

London Olympics

Stephanie Rice suffered an injuring during the 2012 London Olympics in July 2012. She underwent a shoulder surgery after the Olympics. After the London Olympics, Stephanie Rice has relocated to Sydney.

Post Olympics

After a disappointing showing at the London Olympics, Stephanie Rice has said that she is contemplating the future and is not sure whether she will continue or retire. In October 2012, she said she will resume training and will then decide on her future course of action. Stephanie Rice is reportedly eying a career in fashion or media when she retires from Swimming.

Stephanie Rice has visited the Launceston Aquatic Centre on November 18, 2012 and has spent some time chatting with Tasmania's top junior swimmers. She helped the young swimmers giving suggestions to hone their techniques. The visit was part of Swimming Australia's Junior Excellence clinic.
