The 16th Asian Games is held in Guangdong from November 12 - 27, 2010. Guangzhou became the second second Chinese city to host the Asian Games, after Beijing in 1990. 9,704 athletes from 45 Nations are participating in 476 events (42 sports) at the Asian Games.

Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao officially opened the games on November 12, 2010.

Twenty20 Cricket has made its debut in the Asian Games. Bodybuilding was dropped due to a controversy in the 2006 Asian Games.

In May 2009, the Olympic Council of Asia has unveiled its official pictograms and logos of the Asian Games Culture Event as well as the Environment and Volunteers for the 16th Asian Games.

In August 2010, China guaranteed that overseas media will be given freedom to cover the Asian Games and the 2010 Guangzhou Asian Para Games for disabled Asian athletes in December 2010.
