Mars Rover

A Mars rover is an automated motor vehicle which propels itself across the surface of the planet Mars after landing.

Rovers have several major advantages. They can examine more territory, can be directed to interesting features, can place themselves in sunny positions to weather winter months and they can also advance the knowledge of how to perform very remote robotic vehicle control.

There have been four successful Mars rovers, all of them robotically operated.

Rovers sent to Mars

  • Mars 2, Prop-M rover - 1971
  • Mars 3, Prop-M rover - 1971
  • Sojourner rover, Mars Pathfinder - landed successfully on July 4, 1997
  • Beagle 2, Planetary Undersurface Tool, lost with Beagle 2 on deployment from Mars Express in 2003.
  • Spirit (MER-A), Mars Exploration Rover, launched on June 10, 2003
  • Opportunity (MER-B), Mars Exploration Rover, launched on July 7, 2003
  • Curiosity, Mars Science Laboratory, by NASA. It was launched November 26, 2011

Curiosity

The Mars rover touched down on August 6 inside a giant impact basin near the planet's equator. The primary target for the two-year mission is a three-mile high mound of layered rock rising from the floor of Gale Crater.

The Nasa's Mars rover, Curiosity, has found clear evidence on 27 September 2012, that its landing site was once awash in water.
