Chatterjee during Motion of Confidence in Lok Sabha - July 2008

Somnath Chatterjee, as the Lok Sabha Speaker, played an important role during the Motion of Confidence in July 2008. The speaker called a meeting of floor leaders to discuss the trust vote and charied the meeting ahead of the special session. He scheduled the Lok Sabha trust vote at 7 p.m. of July 22. He said that the issue of money offered to BJP MPs by Samjwadi Party will be investigated. However, Legal experts say the role of Speaker is limited in cash-for-vote scam probe. He gave a special permission to former PM and BJP leader Vajpayee leave the lobby on health grounds. Former LS Speaker and NCP leader Purno A Sangma said that the Speaker will vote with government in the event of a tie. At the end of the day, the proceedings of the Lok Sabha debate are suspended following opposition ire. Overall, Chatterjee earned praise for smooth conduct of the house in which the UPA won the trust vote by 275 to 256

Expulsion from the party

The CPI(M) expelled Somnath Chatterjee from the party on July 23, 2008 following the laters refusal to resign from the post of the Speaker of Lok Sabha after the left party withdrew support to the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Government over the India-US civil nuclear deal. Chatterjee is with the party since 1968 and is considered one of the finest Parliamentarian. He even won the "Outstanding Parliamentarian Award" in 1996. The PM Manmohan Singh met Somnath Chatterjee a day after the laters expulsion. A Congress spokesperson said Chatterjee will continue to be the Lok Sabha Speaker.

In September 09, Chatterjee has hit out at CPI(M) leadership terming the charges it levelled against him were a character assassination and the current political culture of the present leadership made the party and Left politics almost irrelevant.

Views on 2009 Indian Parliamentary Elections

Reacting to the worst ever performance by the CPI (M) in the 2009 Indian Parliamentary Elections, Chatterjee said Prakash Karat should consider quitting taking responsibility of his partys no-show in the elections.
