Cap on subsidised LPG cylinders

Veerappa Moily, on 11 December 2012 indicated that the centre could increase the number of subsidised LPG cylinders from 6 to 9. A formal announcement has not been made. The Election Commission took exception to the move ahead of the Gujarat legislative assembly elections. It also sought an explanation from Moily for his comments. The EC held an emergency meeting on 12 Dec 2012 which was chaired by Chief Election Commissioner V S Sampath.

In his response to the EC, Moily said, "There has been widespread demand from all sections of society particularly women, including political parties cutting across party lines, both inside and outside the Parliament to increase the cap in supply of domestic LPG cylinders...the government is yet to take a decision on the matter. As such my response to media queries explained above should not be treated as an announcement regarding the decision of the government."
