United Progressive Alliance


The United Progressive Alliance is a coalition of center-left political parties in India. It was formed after the General Election in 2004. The alliance is led by the Indian National Congress (INC). The chairperson of the UPA is Sonia Gandhi. As of 2012, UPA heads the government of India. The coalition is led by the INC, which is the single largest political party in the Lok Sabha (the lower house of the parliament of India). The Prime Minister of India, Manmohan Singh, and the Council of Ministers are drawn from members of the UPA.

Second Term

In July 09, the BJP advised UPA Government against resumption of talks with Pakistan till India's foreign policy on Baluchistan was made clear unequivocally.

2012

In September 2012, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has announced several reforms including Rs. 5 hike in diesel prices, subsidization of LPG, FDI in retail and civil aviation.

12th Five Year Plan

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh announced the 12th Five-Year plan on September 15, 2012. He earlier chaired a meeting of the Planning Commission. The government is targeting an inclusive and sustainable grown at 8.2%. Health and Education sectors are being focused.

Trinamool Congress withdraws support

Trinamool Congress withdrew his support from the UPA 2 on September 18, 2012 over the diesel price hike and FDI reforms issue. TMC has earlier given a 72-hour deadline to Congress to rollback the hike and reforms.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh met President Pranab Mukherjee on 22 September 2012, a day after the Trinamool Congress withdrew its support to the government. The Prime Minister has discussed the political situation with the President.

After the withdrawal of TMC's support, the UPA has been reduced to a working minority and still enjoys outside support from Samajwadi Party (22 MPs), Bahujan Samaj Party (21 MPs) and the Rashtriya Janata Dal (4).

Union Cabinet hikes Dearness Allowance

The Union Cabinet on September 24, 2012 has hiked the dearness allowance by 7% to 72% from 65%. The last time they hiked the DA was in March 2012.

Dec 12, 2012: The government offered to hold an inquiry into allegations of payment made by US retail giant Walmart in India. However, it denied the opposition demand of a time bound probe by either a Joint Parliamentary Committee or judiciary. RJD and Samajwadi Party also demanded a thorough probe into reports.

Direct Benefits Transfer

The pilot phase of the Direct Cash Transfer scheme was launched on 1 January 2013 in 20 districts across six states.
