Uddhav Thackeray


Uddhav Thackeray is the executive president of the Shiv Sena party. He took over the role from his father and party founder Bal Thackeray in 2004. His son Aditya heads the Shiv Sena's youth body 'Yuva Sena'.

Before entering mainstream politics, Uddhav Thackeray was looking after the Marathi daily newspaper Saamana. He was appointed the party working president in 2003 after the party won the Brihan Mumbai Municipal Corporation election in 2002. He had a fall out with Shiv Sena leader Narayan Rane leading to the expulsion of the later. Uddhav also had a falling-out with his cousin Raj Thackeray, following which Raj left the party to form his own party, the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena.

Controversies

On September 5, 2012 Uddhav Thackeray made a controversial comment when he said that it may be necessary to allow Biharis in Mumbai only on permits. A complaint was filed at the Muzaffarpur court, following which the CJM of the court directed the police to lodge an FIR against him.

Health Issues

Uddhav Thackeray was admitted to the Lilavati Hospital in Mumbai on July 16, 2012 after he complained of chest pain. He underwent an Angioplasty and the all three blockages in his arteries were removed. He was discharged from the hospital on July 23, 2012.

Maharashtra Tour

Uddhav Thackeray has announced that he will tour Maharashtra to interact with party activists. The tour will start on December 3, 2012 in Kolhapur of west Maharashtra. He will tour in several regions from 35 districts of the state.

Despite leading rival parties, Uddhav Thackeray sprung a surprise by praising Maharashtra chief minister Prithviraj Chavan for ordering a probe into the irregularities in the irrigation department. On 7 October 2012, the Shiv Sena chief also urged the Congress not to remove Chavan as chief minister until the inquiry is over.
