About Trinamool Congress

Trinamool Congress is the leading opposition party in West Bengal, India

Against Tata Motors Singur Project

Trinamool Congress is against the Tata Motors Singur Project and demanded returning the 400 acres of land to the farmers who are unwilling to part with their land. On August 24, 2008, the party supremo Mamta Banerjee started an indefinite agitation in Singur. About 2000 policemen and RAF Police are deployed as a safety measure. The protests in front of the Tata car plant choked the Durgapur Expressway on Monday, hampering vehicular movement on the entire highway. On August 25, West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb wrote to Mamata again over Tata impasse. but ruled out taking back the alloted 400 acres land. Truck drivers had a tough time because of their immobility as they get stranded on Durgapur highway. On August 29, party supporters began preventing TATA workers from leaving the plant. The Government came out and said that Singur land cant be returned legally according to the law.

Incidently, Tata project supporters have used a Tata Nano Car replica as an icon at a makeshift tent as part of Durga puja celebrations.

On October 3, 2008, Ratan Tata agreed to meet Buddhadeb to discuss about the project and later that evening, he formally announced he is withdrawing the project from West Bengal and held Mamata responsible for moving out of Singur.
