Tarun Gogoi is a politician of the Indian National Congress and is the current Chief Minister of the Assam.

Personal Biography

Tarun Gogoi was born on April 1, 1936 in Jorhat of Assam.


Tarun studied at the Jorhat Government Boys School. He graduated in BA from University of Dibrugarh. He later pursued LL.B at University of Guwahati.

He married Dolly Gogoi in 1972 and the couple has two children.

Professional Biography

Tarun Gogoi served as the Chief Minister of Assam since 2001. Gogoi led Congress to victory in three consecutive legislative assembly elections in Asssam.

Before entering politics, Tarun pratised law with the Assam Bar Council. He has served in several positions before entering main stream politics.

He has served as the chairman of Assam Small-Scale Industries Development Corporation and was later elected to the Jorhat Municipal Board in 1968.

As Assam Chief Minister

Gogoi demanded for a National Security Guard (NSG) hub in Guwahati to efficiently tackle terror.

Towards Education

On the occasion of Teachers Day in 2012, Tarun Gogoi promised to set up a Teachers' Advisory Council and Teachers-Guardians Coordination Committee in Assam.

Favors FDI in multi-brand retail

Tarun Gogoi said that Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in multi-brand retail would benefit the farmers a lot. While addressing a farmers' meet on 2 December 2012, Gogoi said, "The big companies will buy directly from local farmers and this will benefit the farm sector. FDI in the sector would also do away with the problem of middlemen."


Tarun Gogoi paid tributes to the teachers in Assam on the occasion of Teachers Day on September 5, 2012 in Jorhat. Speaking at a function, Tarun said "Teachers are the real moulders of society and they are the ones who can help build a prosperous and progressive society. Learning is a continuous process and teachers must imbibe new knowledge to pass on to students to broaden their mental outlook and vision towards life."
