Sushma Swaraj


Sushma Swaraj is a Senior Indian Politician of the Bharatiya Janata Party. She is the External Affairs Minister of India in Narendra Modi government. She took office in 2014.

Sushma Swaraj was a former Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha.

Sushma Swaraj gained prominence showing political courage by taking on Sonia Gandhi from Bellary in the 1999 elections. She became the first Chief Minister of Delhi in 1998. Swaraj has represented Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Madhya Pradesh in both House of Parliament.

Professional Biography

Sushma Swaraj was the first Women Chief Minister for Delhi state.

Sushma Swaraj won the 2009 Indian Parliamentary Elections from Vidisha constituency by a record margin of 3.89 lakh votes. She took oath as member of the 15th Lok Sabha on June 1, 2009.

2014 General Elections

Sushma Swaraj is one of the leading candidates to be the NDA's choice for the prime ministerial candidate in the 2014 general elections. She has received support from NDA ally Shiv Sena, whose founder Bal Thackeray praised her abilities to lead the nation.

Sushma Swaraj said she is proud of her party to announce Narendra Modi as its prime ministerial candidate. Lauding the leadership skills of Modi, Sushma Swaraj said only her party could help the country recover after the misrule of Congress. She criticized the 10-year rule of Congress during which there was price rise, rampant corruption, drastic condition of farmers, bending before Pakistan and trade recession among others. Four-day visit to China

In January, Sushma left on a four-day visit to China. This was her first visit to Beijing after she assumed office in 2014. She would meet Chinese President Xi Jinping. Sushma Swaraj will holds talks with her Chinese counterpart on issues including bilateral and multilateral. She would attend the Russia-India-China (RIC) trilateral later.

Sushma Swaraj opposed the proposed merger of BSR Congress in Karnataka with BJP. She is also against the idea of former Congress leader Venod Sharma being inducted into Haryana Janahit Congress, an alliance partner of BJP. 2012

Delhi bus gangrape case
Sushma Swaraj demanded that the Delhi bus gangrape case should be tried in a fast-track court in 30 days and that the guilty should be hanged. Speaking in Lok Sabha on 18 Dec 2012, she also criticized Sonia Gandhi for demanding action instead of promising action as it is her government that is in power.

On 22 December 2012, Sushma Swaraj has called up the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and said a special session of Parliament should be called to consider death sentence for heinous crimes against women.
