Sonia Gandhi is the Chairperson United Progressive Alliance (UPA) and the President of the All India National Congress Party, a major Indian political party. She is the wife of former Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.

Professional Biography

As UPA Chairperson

Sonia Gandhi has successfully led the United Progressive Alliance to power for two terms (in 2004 and 2009). After forming the government on both the occasions, Sonia Gandhi is being elected the UPA chairperson.

In February 2009, responding to the allegation that the Congress-led UPA government was going soft on terror, Sonia said that the Congress Party did not require certificate from anyone over effectively dealing with terrorism in the country.

Sonia Gandhi laid the foundation stone of railway coach factory in the Lalganj area. On the second day of her visit, she made a surprise visit to one Rampal's thatched house where she has spent over half-an-hour. She ate "chuda" (flattened rice) and interacted with the family.

2015 Delhi Assembly Elections

Following the exchange of criticism between Sheila Dikshit and Ajay Maken after the party drubbing in Assembly elections, Sonia Gandhi intervened quickly and asked them not to squabble in public. She said the senior leaders should keep restraint and should not make such comments on their colleagues.


Saddened by public mandate

Sonia Gandhi addressed a public meeting in Karimnagar, Andhra Pradesh for the first time after Telangana state is granted. Addressing the people, Sonia Gandhi said that the credit for formation of Telangana state goes entirely to Congress party and appealed to the people to vote for Congress for development of the region. Sonia Gandhi visited Haryana on 9 October 2012 to console the rape victims. She condemned the atrocities against Dalits and the extra judicial prescripts of Khap panchayats on the occasion. Accompanied by Haryana chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, Sonia Gandhi said, "We have a democratic system here, we have judiciary. Law is in the hands of judiciary, nobody else"


On 1 February 2011, Sonia Gandhi addressed a function to mark the release of a special commemorative stamp and First Day Cover brought out in the honour of freedom fighter Chaudhary Ranbir Singh on the occasion of his first death anniversary. She asserts that mere money and power is not every thing in one's life.

She expressed concern over the high school dropout rate among children. On 4 February 2011, Sonia Gandhi said government is committed to ensure that not a single child is deprived of education due to lack of money.

Sonia Gandhi launched the 'Swabhimaan' campaign in New Delhi on 10 February 2011. Expresses hope that this scheme will empower common people.

Personal Biography

Sonia Gandhi was born as Antonia Edvige Albina Maino on December 9, 1946 to Stefano and Paola Maino in Contrada Maini at Lusiana in Italy.

She married Rajiv Gandhi in 1968. Sonia later moved to her mother-in-law Indira Gandhi's house.


Sonia Gandhi faced some health issues in 2011 and has undergone a surgery in the United States in 2011. She has since then visited US occasionally for treatment and check-ups.
