Sonia Gandhi has undergone a surgery in the US in August 2011 for an undisclosed ailment. She spent six weeks for recovery after her surgery. She later went abroad in February 2012 year for a medical check up. In the midst of monsoon session of Parliament in August 2012, Sonia Gandhi again went abroad for a routine medical check-up.

BJP accuses money for treatment came from public exchequer

Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi has pointed to a media report which alleged that Rs. 1800 has been spent on travel and medical treatment of AICC president Sonia Gandhi. He alleged that the money for the treatment and travel of the UPA chairperson has come from the public exchequer. Congress immediately shot back and demanded a public apology from Modi who said that he would offer one if he is proved wrong. Reacting to the remarks, AICC general secretary Digvijay Singh said that BJP is politicizing a health issue and accused that Gadkari is being trained by RSS in 'Nazi Tradition'.

PMO's office rubbishes claims

On 5 October 2012, the Prime Minister's office made it clear that the allegations made by BJP are untrue and misleading. In a statement, the PMO said, "Media reports quoting certain quarters about massive expenses from the exchequer on UPA chairperson's overseas visits have been brought to the notice of the Prime Minister's Office. The reports quoting an expense of Rs. 1,880 crore are untrue and misleading. The Central Information Commissioner has already denied these reports and made a statement. The Prime Minister's Office would like to put on record that the Government has incurred no expenses on UPA Chairperson's visits abroad. Expenses for her security contingent are borne by the Special Protection Group,"
