Shriprakash Jaiswal

Shriprakash Jaiswal is a Member of Parliament representing the Indian National Congress from Kanpur. He is the Minister for Coal.

He earlier served as the Minister of State for Home Affairs since May 23, 2004.

As the Coal Minister

In February 2011, Shriprakash Jaiswal met Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh in a bid to solve the vexed issue of 'go' and 'no go' zone of coal blocks.

In August 2012, he sought a status report on the coal blocks that were allotted since 1993 who failed to develop within a stipulated time-frame.

Sexist remarks

Sriprakash Jaiswal landed himself into a controversy for making derogatory comments on women on 30 Sep 2012. Attending a poetry meet at KK Girls College in Kanpur, Jaiswal compared the joy of a new victory to a new marriage. He said that as the years go by, the celebrations like in a marriage become old. The comments were condemned by several women's organizations who said that his remarks are sexist and deplorable. He apologized for the comments on 2 Oct 2012, and said that he had been quoted out of context. "My remarks have been totally taken out of context. I was inaugurating a kavi sammelan when the news of the cricket victory came. The audience was in a celebratory mood, and I said that a fresh victory when celebrated is good, like a new marriage. In the same way, when a marriage becomes old, then the celebrations are not so much. However, my remarks were taken out of context," Jaiswal said.
