About Sheila Dikshit

Sheila Dikshit was a three time Chief Minister of Delhi. She served as Chief Minister since 1998 till 2014. She is a senior Congress leader and is the leader of Delhi Congress Legislature Party.

On March 5, 2014 Sheila Dikshit was appointed as Governor of Kerala.

Professional Biography

Sheila Dikshit is a Congress politician. She is the Chief Minister of Delhi state.

Political career

As Delhi Chief Minister

On December 10, 2008, she is elected Delhi CLP leader. Earlier she steered Congress to win Delhi for the third consecutive time. She took oath as the Chief Minister for the third consecutive term on December 17, 2008.

She is selected the Best Chief Minister of India, by Journalist Association of India on July 12, 2008.

On April 17, 09, she expressed shock over the torture and death of a 11-year-old student at the hands of a teacher.

She expressed hope of winning all seven seats in Delhi in the 2009 Indian Parliamentary Elections.

In July 09, she assured relief from power cuts in a couple of days and called for action plan on Delhi power crisis and told the city's main power distributor to improve power situation within 15 days.

In September 09, she ordered a high-level inquiry into school stampede at a Delhi Government School in East Delhi that killed five students and injured at least 24.

On October 4, Sheila Dikshit has handed over provisional AADHAR cards to 40 poor persons and "Beghar" cards to 100 homeless persons at Apna Ghar Night Shelter of Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board at Nizamuddin Dargah.

Racial Comments by New Zealand TV Anchor

On October 6, 2010, Paul Henry, a breakfast show host of a New Zealand TV Station - TVNZ was suspended for mispronouncing Sheila Dikshit's name several times in a crude manner. The racial comments sparked a record number of complaints to TVNZ. New Zealand High Commissioner Rupert Holborrow met Minister of External Affairs of India, SM Krishna and apologized for the comments made by the anchor. New Zealand Foreign Minister Murray McCully termed the racial comments made by the anchor as "regrettable abuse of freedom of speech". Perturbed Hindus demanded immediate termination of the anchor for ridiculing the Chief Minister. TVNZ's chief executive Rick Ellis on October 9, said that he would decide Henry's future over the weekend.

New Zealand Prime Minister John Key said that the racial remarks made against Sheila Dikshit has embarassed his country. In another incident, few of the Kiwi-Indian students who are protesting the racial slur had their facebook pages bombarded with racist hate messages. Despite calling the country's TV presenter's comments against New Delhi Chief Minister, Sheila Dikshit, as racist, that has embarrassed his country, New Zealand Prime Minister John Key has said he would continue to appear on the TVNZs Breakfast show every week.

Congress drubbing in Delhi - 2015 Delhi Assembly Elections

After Congress drew a blank in the 2015 Delhi Assembly elections, Sheila Dilkshit pinned blame on Congress chief miniterial candidate Ajay Maken. She said the party should have been more aggressive in campaign and that last minute changes in Congress campaign committee confused Congress workers and hurt party prospects. Dikshit also criticized Maken's remarks about her government's decision on regularisations of illegal colonies as well as power tariffs. She however defended Rahul Gandhi saying that the performance of the party is no reflection on him. Feb 12, 2015



Delhi University Student Union Polls
Sheila Dikshit lauded the election outcome in the Delhi University Students Union polls and congratulated the NSUI candidates. On 15 September 2012, Dikshit said that outcome reflects the support for Congress among the people and appealed to the winners to work for betterment of the students in Delhi University. She accompanied the election winners when they called on AICC chief Sonia Gandhi and AICC general secretary Rahul Gandhi.


On 21 December 2012, Sheila Dikshit said that she would do everything she can to do justice to the 23-year-old medical student who was gangraped in a moving bus.

Speaking at the 57th National Development Council meeting, Sheila Dikshit said that unbridled influx of migrants into Delhi is posing new challenges. "Delhi's burgeoning population trend is further exacerbated by the continuous and unbridled influx of people from all over the country. Higher wages, better educational and health care facilities, more employment opportunities are some of the factors responsible for the continuous influx," she said. Dec 27, 2012
