Shashi Tharoor is an Indian Politician and the former Minister of State for External Affairs. He is a Member of Parliament in Lok Sabha.

Professional Biography


He is a former United Nations diplomat and writer. He was also chairman of Afras Ventures, a Dubai-based company seeking to promote foreign investments in India, specifically Kerala. He contested in the 2009 Indian Parliamentary Elections from the Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala constituency. As of Saturday, May 16, 2009 9:30 AM IST, Tharoor is leading in the election. As of 10:47 AM IST, he is leading by 20,000 votes.

'Cattle class' twitter comment

Tharoor was in the midst of remarks for his 'cattle class' comment made on Twitter. He actually said that he was prepared to travel in the cattle class out of solidarity with all our holy cows and apologised for the tweet. The Congress party slammed him for the remark. All India Youth Federation (AIYF) activists have burnt his effigy in Thiruvananthapuram. Congress said it will take action against Tharoor at the appropriate time. Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh himself has termed Tharoors Twitter comments as just a joke. On September 22, 2009, Tharoor met Sonia Gandhi and is reported to have discussed about the tweet controversy.

Kochi IPL team controversy

In April 2010, Tharoor's name was dragged into controversy related to the Kochi IPL Team of the Indian Premier League. Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee summoned Tharoor to discussed about the controversy over his links with the Kochi IPL. On April 14, 2010, Tharoor met Mukherjee and clarified his position in the presence of Defense Minister A K Antony.

Delhi gangrape incident

Shashi Tharoor made controversial remarks favoring the identity of the girl in the Delhi gangrape incident to be revealed. He added that the anti-rape legislation should be revised and named after the victim if her parents do not have any objection. The Congress party steered cleared of the controversy saying those are his personal remarks. Jan 1, 2013

Reacting to the comment, the family of the victim said that it would be an honour if the revised anti-rape law is named after the girl. Jan 2, 2013

2014 Elections

Shashi Tharoor terms BJP prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi as "bleeder" and Arun Jaitley as "pleader". Without naming the BJP leaders directly, Tharoor said India does not need "a bleeder or a pleader" as Prime Minister.
