About Samajwadi Party

Samajwadi Party is a Indian national-level political party. Mulayam Singh Yadav is its party chief.

The party won the 2012 Legislative Assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh. Akhilesh Yadav, son of Mulayam Singh Yadav, is the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh.

Film actor Sanjay Dutt contested on behalf of the party from Lucknow constituency.

In May 2010, the party decided to re-nominate outgoing member and film actress Jaya Bachchan in the biennial elections to the Rajya Sabha.

The Party's National Executive Committee held its meeting in Kolkata in May 2010 to chart out the party's strategy for the upcoming assembly polls to some states scheduled during the year 2011and 2012.

In July 2010, the party joined with other parties and staged protests for nationwide bandh against the Congress-led UPA governments decision to hike fuel prices.

2009 Indian Parliamentary Elections

On April 26, 2009, the party ruled out support to Third Front and of any post-poll tie-up with the Third Front or the Left parties saying as long as the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) is with the Third Front, it will not support it.

On Saturday, May 16, 2009, the party said it will take a decision on supporting UPA if at all it requires on May 17, 2009.
