Prithviraj Chavan


Prithviraj Chavan is the current Chief Minister of Maharashtra. He was sworn on November 11, 2010 after the Indian National Congress (INC) chose him to be the successor of Ashok Chavan.

AICC president Sonia Gandhi chose Prithviraj Chavan as the successor of Ashok Chavan after the later was alleged to be involved in the Adarsh scam.

Prior to becoming the Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Ashok Chavan was a member of Rajya Sabha. He also served as the Minister of State in the Prime Minister's Office. He began his political career in 1991. He won the Lok Sabha constituency in 1991, 1996 and 1998. He lost in the 1999 election.

Personal Biography

Prithviraj Chavan was born to Anandrao (Dajisaheb Chavan) and Premalakaki Chavan, who are both politicians. His father Dajisaheb was a member of Lok Sabha from Karad constituency and served as a Minister in cabinets of former Prime Ministers Jawaharlal Nehru, Lal Bahadur Shastri and Indira Gandhi.

Prithviraj studied at the Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani and graduated in mechanical engineering. He holds a Master of Science degree from the University of California, Berkeley.

Prithviraj Chavan ordered a probe into the arrest of cartoonist Aseem Trivedi, who was charged with sedition.

October

On 6 October 2012, Prithviraj Chavan orders a probe into the irregularities in the state irrigation department. The irregularities were alleged in the Gosikhurd and Bawanthadi irrigation projects in Vidarbha in which 45 senior officials are alleged to be involved. Devendra Shirke, the water resources secretary, who was the executive director of Vidarbha Irrigation Development Corporation will also face the probe.
