Manmohan Singh

Manmohan Singh is the current Prime Minister of India. He is the first Prime Minister since Jawaharlal Nehru to return to power after completing a full five-year term.

As Prime Minister of Indian - Second term

The second term of Manmohan Singh as Prime Minister of India is marred with controversies. There were several allegations of corruption made against the government. The alleged scams like 2G spectrum scam, Coal blocks allocation scam have dimmed the prospects of another term in power for the United Progressive Alliance.

Re-election as PM

Dr. Singh is re-selected by the Congress Party as its Prime Ministerial candidate for the 2009 Indian Parliament Elections. On Saturday, May 16, 2009, the Congress party confirmed Dr Singh will remain as Prime Minister after the United Progressive Alliance registered its historic win. Sharad Pawar reconfirmed Manmohan will undisputedly be the Prime Minister from UPA. This will make Manmohan Singh the only Congress Prime Minister next to Jawaharlal Nehru to be re-elected after completing a 5-year term. He will equal Atal Bihari Vajpayee's feat of becoming PM for two consecutive terms.

Taking oath

Dr Manmohan Singh took oath as PM for the second time on May 22, 2009. 19 cabinet ministers also took oath along with him. Just a day after taking oath, he called upon cabinet meeting with the new cabinet ministers.

Manmohan Singh expressed deep shock over the Sivakasi firecracker tragedy in which over 50 were killed and 80 others injured. He announces an ex gratia of Rs. 2 lakhs to the next of kin.

Golden jubilee celebrations of Kerala Union of Working Journalists

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has inaugurated the golden jubilee celebrations of Kerala Union of Working Journalists on September 13, 2012 in Kochi. Speaking on the occasion, Manmohan Singh said that the media should maintain restraint and avoid the desire to publish sensational news that could divide the society and the country. His advice comes in the backdrop of the recent ethnic violence in Assam that led to the exodus of north-easterns back to their home states.

"The desire to be sensational should be avoided even though it is very tempting sometimes. Restraint should be exercised so that nothing that divides our society and country is written, broadcast or telecast," he said.

October 2012

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh inaugurated the seventh annual convention of Information Commissioners in New Delhi on 12 October 2012. Addressing the gathering, Manmohan Singh said a fine balance between to RTI and he right to privacy should be maintained.

December 2012

  • February 25, 2011: Manmohan Singh lauds the Railway budget for 2011-12 financial year. Terms it a common man's budget.

  • February 12, 2011: Manmohan Singh inaugurates the new International Terminal Building at Trivandrum Airport. Says aviation industry has the potential to create jobs to tens of thousands of people directly and indirectly.

  • February 11, 2011: Manmohan Singh inaugurates Kochi international container terminal, India's first International Container Trans-shipment Terminal (ICTT) in the Special Economic Zone at nearby Vallarpadam Island. He says that the UPA Government at the Centre is committed to help Kerala to realise its full development potential. He says that the State has the obligation to play a facilitating role in the development and promotion of creative arts and diverse cultural expressions of the country.
  • February 10, 2011: Manmohan Singh expresses concern on the issues of absorption of nutrition, health and hygiene. Addresses a conference on 'Leveraging agriculture for improving nutrition and health' in New Delhi.
  • February 3, 2011: Manmohan Singh says India is set to reduce the emissions intensity of GDP by 20 per cent between 2005 and 2020.
  • February 2, 2011: Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh condoles the death of prominent security expert K. Subrahmanyam.
  • February 1, 2011: Manmohan Singh warns of 'stern action' following Shunglu Committee's report.

UPA's completion of 1 year in its IInd term

Dr. Singh addressed the nation completion of one year of the UPA Government in its second term. Speaking on the occasion, he said that the flagship programmes launched by his government are progressing well. He said the government's medium term target is to achieve a growth rate of 10 percent per annum.

Criticism

Washington Post

In September 2012, a Washington Post article has termed Manmohan Singh as an ineffectual bureaucrat. The article said that Manmohan Singh is in the danger of going down as a failure in history. Here are some of excerpts from the article.

"... the image of the scrupulously honorable, humble and intellectual technocrat has slowly given way to a completely different one: a dithering, ineffectual bureaucrat presiding over a deeply corrupt government,"

"economic reforms have stalled, growth has slowed sharply and the rupee has collapsed. But just as damaging to his reputation is the accusation that he looked the other way and remained silent as his cabinet colleagues filled their own pockets".

Reaction from PMO's office

The Communications Adviser to the Prime Minister’s Office, Pankaj Pachauri, wrote to Simon Denyer at the Washington Post and said that while they accept criticism on the government, it is unfair unethical and unprofessional conduct not to get the other side of the story.

Reaction from the Congress party

Ambika Soni demanded an apology saying that the claims made in the newspaper were completely baseless. She said she would take up the issue with Ministry of External Affairs and other government departments and act against it.

Other information

On September 23, 2009, Manmohan Singh congratulated the ISRO scientists for their successful Oceansat-2 launch. He later left to participate G20 summit in Pittsburgh, USA.

In October 2009, he said the border dispute between India and China is a complex and time consuming issue, which will be discussed by Foreign Ministers of both the countries in Bangalore from 27th October.

In December 2009, Dr. Singh was on an official visit to the United States.

In May 2010, the 50-minute talk between Manmohan Singh and his Pakistani counterpart Yousuf Raza Gilani on the sidelines of the XVIth South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) summit in Thimpu may have done more than just clearing the air between both nations, it has suddenly developed a sweet relationship between Dr. Singh and Gilani. Also during the month, he called for dramatic reform and improvement in the scope and quality of legal education system to make law fraternity sensitive to the needs of the marginalised sections.

On November 20, 2010 Manmohan Singh said that a dialogue with Pakistan cannot take place until the "terror machine" there is brought under control.

Manmohan Singh goes on a three-day visit to Brussels and Berlin. He meets German Chancellor Angela Merkel who promises that Germany would extend its fullest cooperation to India in battling militancy. He returns back to Delhi on December 12, 2010.
