As Finance Minister (Additional Charge)

Mukherjee took additional charge of Ministry of Finance upon assignment by President Pratibha Devisingh Patil from January 24, 2009 onwards till the Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh recovers after undergoing medical treatment. Earlier to Manmohan Singh took the charge of Finance after P Chidambaram was moved to become the Home Minister.

As Finance Minister (Second Term; Since May 2009)

  • Pranab Mukherjee was given the Finance Ministry portfolio when the UPA Government was back to power for the second consective term in May 2009.
  • In July 09, Mukherjee said that the Government has decided to substantially improve the pension of pre 01.01.2006 defence pensioners below officer rank and bring pre 10.10.1997 pensioners on par with post 10.10.1997 pensioners. He said budget proposals for the year 2009-10 in Lok Sabha, Mukherjee said that it was based on the recommendation of the Committee headed by the Cabinet Secretary on One Rank One Pension (OROP)
  • In September 09, he gave a clear and firm message that ministers and bureaucrats who are entitled to travel on state expenses should undertake domestic travel in economy class. He himself flew in an economy class of a budget airline from Delhi to Kolkata during the month. At an interactive session of the Confederation of Indian Industry, he said a Bill on direct tax code will be introduced during the winter session of Parliament; the new Bill is expected to come into effect from April, 1, 2011. He said the government will get into other measures like reducing non-plan expenditure to the extend of 10% but this doesn't mean compromise on VIP-security issues.
  • On September 23, 2009, he said that India's economic growth for September 09 will be better than that of June 09.
  • In October 09, Pranab promised India's contribution to South-South experience exchange facility.
  • In August 2010, he said the Union Government is in touch with the Uttar Pradesh authorities over farmers protest. Earlier, the Lok Sabha was adjourned till 2 p.m after lawmakers refused to allow proceedings to progress in protest against the death of three farmers in police firing in Uttar Pradeshs Aligarh and Mathura regions.
  • Pranab Mukherjee addressed the 42nd Annual Conference of Southern India Regional Council of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) on November 28, 2010. Speaking on the occasion, he asked Chartered Accountants to apply accounting standards uniformly and assist in presenting the true picture of the financial health of the company while ensuring accountability in all aspects.
