As Indian Home Minister - First Term

In November 08, Shivraj Patil resigned from his post of being the Home Minister of India in the wake of Mumbai terrorist attacks. His resignatin was accepted following which P Chidambaram took charge as the new Home Minister of India on December 1, 2008. His position of Finance Minister was looked after as an additional charge by Indian Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh before being handed over to Pranab Mukherjee. Speaking soon after taking charge, Chidambaram said he will put in the same principles and work ethic that he had used in the Finance Ministry.

In December 08, he review law and order situation in West Bengal in view of Mumbai terror attacks. Speaking at the Parliament, he said that the Government will be setting up a terrorist investigating agency at the national-level. The Union Cabinet soon gave its approval for the setting up of National Investigating Agency (NIA). He introduced the National Investigation Agency Bill in Lok Sabha on December 16, 2008. Replying in the Rajya Sabha Question Hour on December 17, 2008, he termed Chattisgarh's anti-naxalite group, 'Salva Judum' as a non-state actor.

As Indian Home Minister - Second Term

Chidambaram took charge as Home Minister for the second time on May 25, 2009.

Dealing with the Pakistan

In June 2010, he arrived at Islamabad ahead of SAARC Interior Minister's Conference.

In August 2010, Pakistan strongly condemned Chidambaram's comments that Islamabad was playing a role in instigating the Kashmiri population to commit acts of violence.

Dealing with the Mumbai attacks episode

In September 2009, Chidambaram briefed Hillary Clinton on Pakistans inaction against 26/11 perpetrators. On September 21, 09, Chidambaram said Hafiz Saeed should be interrogated for 26/11 attacks.

On the second anniversary of the 26/11 attacks, Chidambaram paid tributes to those killed in the attack. He said that Pakistan had not fulfilled their promise to bring the 26/11 attack masterminds to justice.

Dealing with the Maoists menace

Chidambaram made a two-day visit to Maoist-hit Lalgarh in West Midnapore district where he asked the West Bengal Government to take stern measures against the Maoists. His visit is aimed at assessing the ongoing joint operations against the Maoists in the region.

About Indian Police force

In June 2010, speaking at the 40th All India Police Science Congress, he called for doubling the capacity of police training institutes in the states as well as the number of policemen and women being recruited every year.
