Prostrate Cancer

Nelson Mandela underwent seven weeks of radiation therapy in 2001 for prostate cancer which he beat.

Acute Respiratory Infection

Nelson Mandela has been suffering with acute respiratory infection since January 2011. His lung impairment is attributed to tuberculosis which Mandela contracted during his 27 years in prison during the apartheid era.

Lung Infection

In December 2012, it was revealed that Nelson Mandela is suffering from a recurring lung infection. On 8 December 2012, Mandela has been hospitalized at the 1 Military Hospital in Pretoria for medical tests. Routine tests on Mandela have detected lung infection. The presidential spokesman told the media that Mandela is responding to the treatment well.

A Government spokesman said that Nelson Mandela has been doing good since his discharge from the hospital, but said he is not fully recovered. Dec 27, 2012

In early June 2010, Mandela's great granddaughter has been killed in a car crash while returning from a 2010 FIFA World Cup kick-off concert in Soweto.

At the end of June 2010, it appeared that Mandela's presence at the final of the World Cup on July 11, 2010 was uncertain. The uncertainity loomed even in the early of July 2010. FIFA president Sepp Blatter said that Mandela is likely to be given the honor of presenting the World Cup trophy to the winner of Sundays final, if he attends the match.
