Meira Kumar


Meira Kumar is the current Speaker of Lok Sabha in the Indian Parliament. She is a senior Congress leader and is a five time Member of Parliament. Meira Kumar was elected unopposed as the Speaker on June 3, 2009. She is also the first woman speaker of the Indian Parliament.

Professional Biography

Political life

Meira Kumar served as the Indian Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment.

On November 20, 2010 Meira Kumar spoke at the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) countries Public Service Commission Members Conference. She asserted that the civil servants have to play a decisive role as catalysts for social transformation.

Meira Kumar, on 3 December 2012, said that she is not under any pressure when she took the decision to allow voting on FDI in the Parliament. The voting on FDI will take place on Tuesday and Wednesday in both the houses of Parliament.
