Mayawati is a member of the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the Indian Parliament. She is the chief of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP).

Mayawati is a former Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh.


On 12 December 2012, Mayawati lashed out at the Chairman of Rajya Sabha Mohd. Hamid Ansari for leaving the house at 12 noon every day and missing the question hour. She demanded Ansari to make the government's stand clear on the SC/ST promotion quota bill.

On 22 December 2012, Mayawati said that the Government was never serious about the SC/ST promotion quota bill as they didn't the show the same commitment that was displayed in women's reservation bill in Rajya Sabha in March 2010. She termed Sonia Gandhi's pursuit of Samajwadi Party MP who snatched the bill in the Lok Sabha as 'pure theatre'.

Land allotment to Rae Bareli rail coach factory

Mayawati government cancelled a land allotment for a rail coach factor in Sonia Gandhi's Rae Bareli constituency but cancelled the allotment just a day before Ms. Gandhi is to visit for the ground breaking ceremony citing cited resentment among displaced farmers as the reason for the cancellation. Mayawati termed the factory as a political conspiracy to mislead the poor, specially the residents of the constituency. Mayawati said that Sonia's challenge that she was ready to go to jail if not allowed into her constituency as political drama. The Lucknow bench of Allahabad High Court had directed the state and the Centre to maintain the status quo on the land allotted to the Railways for setting up of a rail coach factory in Rae Bareli. Lucknow High Court had imposed a stay on the CM's order and Sonia continued her Rae Bareli visit. Mayawati Government withdrew its decision and returned land for rail project but the series of events have sparked differences between Mayawati and Sonia.

On October 23, 2008, Samajwadi Party workers demonstrating against Mayawati Government about the land allotment cancellation and clashed with policemen in Varanasi. On October 24, 2008, Vice Chancellor of Chandrashekhar Azad University has invited Rahul Gandhi for an interactive session but cancelled the program at the last moment. Rahul however met the students at the cafeteria instead of auditorium.

As PM candidate

CPI (M) general secretary Prakash Karat today said that Mayawati can be a PM candidate of a non-Congress and non-BJP alliance at the Centre depending on the outcome of the Lok Sabha elections. Mayawati promised reservation to poor among upper castes if BSP comes to power at centre.


Mayawati demanded ban on Maharashtra Navanirman Sena echoing calls by other legislators in parliament and warned of a backlash against Maharashtrians in Uttar Pradesh and other states.

SC/ST promotion quota bill

During a debate on the SC/ST promotion quota reservation bill in the Rajya Sabha on 13 Dec 2012, BSP chief Mayawati said she is never opposed to quota in promotion to those from backward classes and added that she is also in favor of giving reservation to people form the upper cast who are economically weak. However, she said that the those in SC, ST categories needed promotions in government services.
