Maneka Gandhi

Maneka Gandhi (born 26 August 1956, Delhi, India) is an Indian politician, animal rights activist, environmentalist, former journalist. She is a politician belonging to the Bharatiya Janata Party. Maneka Gandhi is a seven-time Member of Parliament and younger daughter-in-law of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. She is the widow of Sanjay Gandhi and her son Varun Gandhi is also a politician.

In 2014, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has selected her as a member of his cabinet.


Maneka Gandhi entered active politics after the death of her husband Sanjay Gandhi in an air crash in 1980. She launched her own political outfit after she fell-out with her mother-in-law. In the 1984 general elections, Maneka Gandhi contested against former Prime Minister and her brother-in-law Rajiv Gandhi from Amethi constituency and lost.

Maneka Gandhi was also a union minister in NDA government under Atal Bihari Vajpayee. She is the first Animal Welfare Minister of the country.

Though she was a member of NDA government, Maneka Gandhi officially joined the BJP party only in 2004.

She lost the 2009 Indian Parliamentary Elections by 22,000 votes in Aonla, Uttar Pradesh.

2014 Elections

Maneka Gandhi won from the Pilibhit constituency in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections by a margin of over 3 lakh votes.
