Mamata Banerjee is the Chief Minister of West Bengal. She is the President of Trinamool Congress. Before becoming the Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee served as the Indian Railway Minister.

Professional Biography

As Indian Railway Minister

In July 09, she promised better hygiene on trains and to make the journey more comfortable for the passengers.

In August 09, she inaugurated Only Ladies EMU train services in Northern Railway between Delhi-Palwal at New Delhi station. She proposed a rail coach factory at Singur if the land earlier acquired by the Tata Motors to set up Nano factory was made available. Ratan Tata said he is willing to return Singur land if compensated.

On September 15, 2009, she said her Bengal focus not affecting her work as Rail minister and defend herself against the charge of being an "absentee" minister.

On September 18, 09, Mamata said an external agency would probe allegations of graft during Lalu's tenure as Railway Minister.

Chief Minister of West Bengal

Mamata Banerjee won the history 2012 West Bengal legislative elections defeating the Left Front. She became the Chief Minister of West Bengal.

Remarks against Judiciary

In August 2012, Mamata Banerjee made controversial comments about judiciary. In the West Bengal state assembly, Mamata Banerjee said, "At times, favourable verdicts are given in return for money. These days, judgements are purchased. There is corruption among a section of the judiciary. I know there can be a defamation suit against me for saying this. But this must be said and I am ready to go to jail for saying so," she said. She defended by her remarks saying that she is ready to go to jail for the same.

The remarks came after the state's human rights commission, which is headed by a former Supreme Court judge, ordered her to pay Rs 50,000 each to a professor of the Jadavpur University and his friend, after they were arrested in April 2012 over some cartoons of the chief minister they reportedly circulated through their official email.

The Supreme Court of India, on 24 September 2012, will hear a contempt petition against her for the comments.
