M Karunanidhi is the head of Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) party in Tamil Nadu. He is the former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. MK Stalin is his son.

Professional Biography

Karunanidhi is the president of DMK, a regional political party in Tamil Nadu. He has been the chief of the party since since the death of its founder, CN Annadurai, in 1969.

Karunanidhi served as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu for five terms (1969-71, 1971-76, 1989-91, 1996-2001 and 2006-2011).

On Lanka Tamil Issue

In January 09, he warned the UPA over Lanka Tamil issue and urged the Centre to take tougher steps to ensure a cease fire in Sri Lanka.

Karunanidhi was hospitalized on January 26, 09 after complaining of a back ache. UPA chief Sonia Gandhi spoke with his daughter Kanimozhi and wished a speedy recovery.

In October 2009, Union Home Minister Palaniappan Chidambaram called on Karunanidhi and discussed resettlement of over 2.5 lakh Tamilian refugees of Sri Lankas war against LTTE.


To stay in touch with his followers, Karunanidhi has joined the social networking site Twitter on August 15, 2012. He has attracted a large number of followers within few hours of joining Twitter.



Karunanidhi said he has not politicised the issues of the release of seven convicts in the Rajiv Gandhi murder case. He merely issued a poser to the Chief Justice of India P Sathasivam's comments on the case as judges should not politicise such issues. Apr 21, 2014

On 1 October 2012, Karunanidhi said that he wants the CBI to probe into the granite businesses since the days of the previous AIADMK regime in 2001. Saying it is impossible to tell the culprits from the innocent in the granite quarrying scam, Karunanidhi said that the CBI probe would clear out the issues.
