LK Advani is a senior politician of the Bhartiya Janta Party. He was a former Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha. He the party's Prime Minister candidate during the 2009 Indian Parliamentary Elections.

On May 16, 2009, Advani announced he is quitting from the post of leader of Opposition. He however agreeed to continue as Leader of Opposition and on May 31, 2009 was unanimously However, he is re-elected Leader of Opposition.

As Member of Parliament

As of Saturday, May 16, 2009 9:30 AM IST, Advani is leading the election. As of Saturday, May 16, 2009 4:30 PM IST, he is leading over rival candidate Patel Sureshkumar Chaturdas (Suresh Patel) (Congress) by 121747 votes. He won the election later that day.

As Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha

Reports in August 09 suggested Advani may step down before next Parliament session as part of the BJP succession plan formula. The Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS) has earlier asked him to oversee BJP succession plan and work on a blue print for the same

In October 09, he termed the state of Maharashtra the record holder for most cases of farmer suicides. He blamed the Congress for and the ruling UPA Government for not developing the energy sector and held it responsible for water woes and inflation in the country. He campaigned in Haryana for assembly polls.

Comments and Criticism


On 9 October 2012, LK Advani has praised the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) that was enacted in August 2005 by the UPA government. He said that the scheme is the largest cash-for-work programme in the world and would help 53 million poor rural households by ensuring 100 days employment to them each other. He lauded the scheme at the General Debate in the Third Committee during the 67th session of the UN General Assembly.
