K Karunakaran


About K Karunakaran

K Karunakaran (born July 5, 1918 at Kannur, Kerala) is a veteran politician and a four-time Chief Minister of Kerala. He works for the Congress party.

In early-April 2010, he was hospitalized on complaint of breathing problems.

Personal Biography

Karunakaram is born to Kannoth Ramunni Marar and Kannoth Kalyani Marasiyar at Cherukunnu-Chundayil in Kannur District.

He matriculated from Raja's High School Chirakkal and did his diploma in Design, Geometry and Painting from College of Arts, Kannur.

Late Kalyanikutty Amma is his wife. K. Muraleedharan and Padmaja Venugopal are his children.

He lives in Thrissur.

He is a Hindu Marar.

Professional Biography

Political life

Karunakaran left the Congress in May 2005 to form Democratic Indira Congress after having differences with the state and central leadership. His son K Muraleedharan, the then Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) state president, has also left the Congress along with his father. In December 07, Karunakaran rejoined Congress to 'serve the party'.
