Jayanthi Natarajan


Jayanthi Natarajan is a politician and the former Indian Union Minister of Forests and Environment. She was formerly with the Congress party. She was elected to the Parliament four terms. Jayanthi served as Union Minister for Environment in the second term of UPA Government.

She is an Indian lawyer and politician. Jayanthi Natarajan is a member of the Indian National Congress and has been thrice elected Member of Parliament representing the state of Tamil Nadu in the Rajya Sabha. Since July 2011, she has been the Minister of Forests and Environment.

On 1 October 2012, she addressed the opening session of the sixth meeting of the Conference of the Parties (CoP) to the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety (CPB) in Hyderabad.

Quitting Congress Party

On January 30, 2015 Jayanthi Natarajan has tendered her resignation from the primary membership of the Congress party. While announcing her resignation to the media, Jayanthi has released a strong worded letter to Congress president Sonia Gandhi. Jayanthi said she was pained by the treatment meted out to her by the party. She said that the current Congress party is no longer the Congress that she had joined. She also launched a direct attack on Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi. Jayanthi said that all the decisions taken by her in the past as minister of environment were taken by the directives of Rahul Gandhi.

On the day of her announcement of resignation, Youth Congress unit of the Congress party has staged a protest outside her residence in Chennai.

Reactions

The Congress party has hit back at her allegations and suggested that she was acting at the behest of the Bharatiya Janata Party. Congress spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi spoke to media at party headquarters in New Delhi. He said that Jayanthi is acting at the behest of new 'political masters' who may have got evidence against her.
