About Inder Kumar Gujral

Inder Kumar Gujral is the former Prime Minister of India. He passed away on 30 November 2012 after a brief illness.

Gujral migrated from Pakistan after partition.

Gujral is married to Sheila, who died in 2011. She was a poet and author. I K Gujral's brother Satish Gujral is a prominent painter and architect.

He has two sons. Naresh Gujral is a Rajya Sabha MP and an Akali Dal leader.

Professional Biography

Before becoming the Prime Minister in the 90s, Gujral served as Vice President in NDMC in 1950s. He also served as a Union Minister and as Indian Ambassador to USSR.

Though, initially a Congress politician, Gujral left the Congress to join Janata Dal in the late 1980s.

He served as External Affairs Minister in the United Front Government under H D Deve Gowda. He became the Prime Minister after Congress withdrew support to the United Front Government in 1997.

  • 1964 – Elected to Rajya Sabha
  • 1976 - Elected to Rajya Sabha for the second time
  • 1989 - 1991 - Election from Jalandhar parliamentary constituency in Punjab. Becomes the External Affairs Minister under VP Singh (December 1989)
  • 1992 - Elected to Rajya Sabha
  • 1996 - External Affairs Minister under Deve Gowda (June 1996)
  • 1998 - Re-elected to Lok Sabha from Jalandhar as an independent

As Prime Minister of India

Gujral started the Budgam - Anantnag Kashmir Valley train service project in 1998.

He is member of the Honorary committee for Guru Nanak Inter-faith Prize instituted by Hofstra University, New York.

Health

IK Gujral was admitted to a private hospital in Delhi on 19 November 2012 with a lung infection. He is put on a ventilator. Other support systems on his body were initially kept but have been removed on 28 November 2012. His condition remains to be critical.

Death

I K Gujral passed away at 92 on 30 November 2012 after a brief illness. He breathed his last at 3:27 pm. Gujral was on dialysis for over a year and suffered a chest infection earlier. His body had been kept at his residence in Janpath for people to pay their last respects. He was cremated in New Delhi on 1 December 2012 with full state honours.

Both the houses of Parliament will be adjourned on 3 December 2012 (Monday) as a market of respect after paying tributes to Inder Kumar Gujral.
