Bal Thackeray Death


Shiv Sena founder and patriarch Bal Thackeray passed away on November 17, 2012 at 3:33 pm. He was 86. Bal Thackeray was survived by his sons Uddhav Thackeray and Jaidev Thackeray.

In November 2012, Bal Thackeray was admitted in the hospital after he complained of respiratory problems and pancreatic disease. After battling for his life for seven days, he passed away on November 17, 2012 at 3:33 pm at his residence in Bandra. Bal Thackeray went into cardiac arrest despite the best efforts of the doctors. Dr. Jalal Parkar has made the announcement at around 5 pm of the departure of Raj Thackeray outside Matoshree. Thackeray was 86.

Bal Thackeray nephew Raj Thackeray and other top sena leaders rushed to Matoshree on hearing the news of the demise of the Shiv Sena leader.

Body to be kept at Shivaji Park

The body of Bal Thackeray will be kept at Shivaji Park for his followers and party activists to pay their last respects from 7am Sunday. Shivaji Park is close to Bal Thackeray where he addressed his first Dussehra rally 46 years ago and continued to do so till his death.

Security Arrangements

The police have stepped up the security arrangements near Bal Thackeray's residence 'Matoshree' and across Mumbai. Over 20,000 policemen were deployed across the Mumbai city.

Shiv Sena has appealed its followers and party workers to maintain calm and co-operate with the police. Shops and Business establishments were closed in Mahim and Dadar in the wake of the death of Balasaheb.

Heartfelt condolences were poured in after the news broke out that Bal Thackeray has passed away. Following are some of the reactions from the political circles in the country.

Dr. Manmohan Singh, Indian Prime Minister
The official twitter account of the Indian Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh has condoled the passing away of Bal Thackeray. The Prime Minister has cancelled his scheduled dinner with the opposition party leaders. "Prime Minister condoles the passing away of Shri Bala Saheb Thackeray; Cancels his scheduled dinner with Opposition leaders.... He founded the Shiv Sena and built the party into a formidable force in the State politics with his strong leadership.", read the tweet.

In his message, the Prime Minister said, "For him the interests of Maharashtra were particularly important and he always strived to inculcate a sense of pride in its people. He founded the Shiv Sena and built the party into a formidable force in the State politics with his strong leadership. He was a consummate communicator whose stature in the politics of Maharashtra was unique. The passing away of Bala Saheb will be deeply felt by his family and followers."

Sushma Swaraj, Senior BJP Leader and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha
"I am terribly pained to hear that the Lion is dead.", read Sushma Swaraj's tweet.

Nitin Gadkari, BJP President
"He was anxious for Maharashtra's progress. When I was Public Works Department (PWD) minister, he supported many projects which I completed. He was very clear about his views and always expressed them. His political life cannot be forgotten. He was a staunch follower of Hindutva, and was a pioneer of Marathi identity. This has been a deep shock for all of us. His life is exemplary for the rest of us.", said Nitin Gadkari. He also mourned the loss of Thackeray in a live televised address.

"He was fighting like a warrior. But at the end, we are all left sad. He used to fight and love with vigour. He was away from corridors of power. He started his party on his own terms. He never compromised. We have lost a patriotic symbol in his death.", said Narendra Modi.

Really sad to hear about Balasaheb's demise. His contribution to Maharashtra was immense. It's a terrible loss and he will always be remembered and missed. Unfortunately I am in Ahmedabad as I would have liked to pay my last respects personally. My condolences to his family. May God rest his soul in peace.", said Sachin Tendulkar on his Facebook page

Funeral

The final rites of Bal Thackeray was held in the evening on November 18, 2012 at Shivaji Park. Bal Thackeray's son Uddhav Thackeray lit the pyre. The funeral was held with state honors and the Mumbai police have conducted a 21-gun salute and played the final march for him.

Raj Thackeray broke down when the pyre was lit and he wept inconsolably.
