About Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP)

The Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) is an Indian Political Party. It is the main opposition in Uttar Pradesh. Mayawati leads the party.

Kanshi Ram is the founder of BSP. He passed away in 2006.

Victory in 2007 UP Elections

An Australian research showed that mobile phones helped BSP win Uttar Pradesh State Elections in 2007.

2012 UP Elections

In May 2010, Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi ruled out any political understanding with BSP indicating that BSP and Congress will contest separately in 2012 UP Elections.

The Bahujan Samaj Party lost power after the 2012 Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly Elections.

Mahasankalp rally

The Bahujan Samaj Party leaders took out the 'Mahasankalp rally' in Lucknow of Uttar Pradesh. The rally is to mark the sixth death anniversary of BSP founder Kanshi Ram.

Over three lakh BSP supporters from around the country have participated in the rally. 10 special trains were booked by the party to help supporters reach Lucknow to participate in the rally. The rally gained prominence as it is the first rally taken out by BSP chief Mayawati after losing in the State Assembly elections in March 2012.

Addressing the people who participated in the rally, Mayawati criticized Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav and Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav for scrapping the public holiday on the occasion of BSP founder Kanshi Ram's death anniversary. The SP government is also renaming schemes and institutions named after the dalit icon, she said. All the parties are anti-dalit she claimed, adding that the UPA government did not declare national mourning on death of Kanshi Ram six years ago.
