<p>Vajpayee political life began when he joined the political wing of the Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS). Vajpayee was detained by police during a protest against British rule in 1942 and during emergency rule imposed by late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1970. He was elected to the Indian Parliament in 1957.</p>

<p>Vajpayee became Prime Minister in 1996, but only for 13 days and then regained power as head of a multi-party coalition in 1999.</p>
