About Ashok Chavan

Ashok Chavan is an Indian politician and is the Chief Minister of Maharashtra. He is the son of former Union Minister S B Chavan. He served as the Maharashtra Industries Minister and is selected as the new Maharashtra Chief Minister in December 08. He succeeds Vilasrao Deshmukh who resigned taking moral responsibility in the wake of terrorist attack in Mumbai. In October 09, the Congress Party decided to retain him as the chief minister of Maharashtra for the second term.

Professional Biography

As Maharashtra Chief Minister - First term

Chavan took oath as the 24th Chief Minister of Maharashtra on December 8, 2008. He made a quick cabinet reshuffle and even invited suspended Maharashtra leader Narayan Rane to join in his cabinet. On November 9, 2010, the portfolios have been allocated to ministers in his new cabinet. On December 12, 08, he met PM and discuss Maharashtra security scenario.

As Maharashtra Chief Minister - Second term

In October 09, the Congress Party decided to retain Ashok Chavan as the chief minister of Maharashtra for the second term.

In January 2010, Election Commissioner S Y Qureshi said that the manner in which the Election Commission of India handles the complaints against Chavan in the recent Maharashtra assembly election will serve as a test case to demonstrate the commission's commitment to tackle the growing malaise of "paid news".

In March 2010, he opted to play safe in not sharing the stage with Gujarat brand ambassador Amitabh Bachchan at a function in Pune. Instead, he decided to visit the city the day before.
