Amit Shah

Amit Shah is the president of the Bharatiya Janata Party. He is a former Home Minister of Gujarat, India. Amit Shah is a close confident of Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi.


Amit Shah met RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat at the Sangh headquarters in Nagpur. He is the second BJP leader to meet the RSS chief after Home Minister Rajnath Singh met Bhagwat and other RSS leaders earlier this week. 2005 Sohrabuddin Sheikh fake encounter case

Amit Shah was arrested and faced charges of masterminding Sohrabuddin Sheikh's encounter case.

Sohrabuddin and his wife Kauser Bi, were allegedly abducted by the Gujarat's Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) from Hyderabad and killed in a fake encounter near Gandhinagar in November 2005.

Shah was summoned by the Central Bureau of Investigation in the Sohrabuddin Sheikh fake encounter case but he failed to appear before it.

On August 7, 2010, the CBI took Shah into its custody following the order of the Gujarat High Court that granted two-day custody of Shah to the CBI

On August 22, 2010, Women activists of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have sent rakhis to Shah.

Supreme Court grants bail

On 27 September 2012, the Supreme Court of India has granted bail to Amit Shah and allowed him to travel to Gujarat. The court rejected CBI's plea for cancellation of bail in the 2005 Sohrabuddin Sheikh fake encounter case. He attended the two-day national executive meeting of the Bharatiya Janata Party. Speaking on the occasion, Amit Shah said, "Truth has prevailed. I will go to Gujarat and campaign, and give the Congress a fitting reply."

Amit Shah said that he would campaign for the upcoming Gujarat assembly elections and would give the opposition Congress party a fitting reply.

Controversial Remarks

Controversial RemarksAmit Shah has delivered some controversial remarks during his electoral campaign in a riot-hit village near Muzzafarnagar. He said, "If you want to take revenge you should vote for the BJP. You can no longer resolve a matter with swords and arrows. Today you can take revenge by voting for the BJP." "Justice is not being done to the people and it's time to take revenge. It was during the Mughal rule that swords and arrows were used to take revenge. But now you have to vote to take revenge. Press the right button to show them their right place." His remarks were defended by BJP prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi who said he didn't find anything wrong in the speech.

Amit Shah was censured by the Election Commission on 16 April 2014 for his controversial remarks. Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan was also censured. April 16, 2014

Election Commission allows Amit Shah to resume campaign in Uttar Pradesh after he promised the EC that he would not use derogatory language or violate the model code of conduct. The panel said that it would monitor Amit Shah's campaign closely by constant video tracking by district election authorities. April 17, 2014
