A. Raja


About A. Raja

A. Raja is a DMK politician in Tamil Nadu, India. He is a member of Parliamentary Standing Committee on Energy.

He took oath as a cabinet minister on May 28, 2009. He took charge as the Union Minister of Communications and Information Technology on June 1, 2009 and promised drastic cut in telephone tariff. In October 09, he hinted that Indians will be experiencing local telephone calls at rates as low as Rs. 0.10 per minute and STD calls at Rs. 0.25/min.

2G scam

In February 2011, A Raja offered to resign as Propaganda Secretary of the Dravida Munnettra Kazhagam. He was subsequently grilled by CBI for the fourth time on February 2, 2012 in connection to the 2G scam. He was arrested on the same day after questioning.

Bail

After spending 15 months in jail, A Raja was granted bail by the CBI Court in New Delhi. The timing became significant as he applied for bail on grounds of 'principle of parity' as all other accused in the case have been granted bail. Commenting on granting bail to Raja, the BJP party said that the law is taking its own course and emphasized that action should be taken on the big names involved in the scam.

A Raja has been released on bail on May 15, 2012.
