Background

The by-polls were necessitated as 16 Congress MLAs were disqualified when they voted against the Government in the no-confidence motion sponsored by the Telugu Desam Party. The disqualified MLAs later joined the YSR Congress Party. MLA of the erstwhile Praja Rajyam Party, Shobha Nagi Reddy, also joined the YSR Congress Party. The by-poll will also be held at the Tirupati constituency as Chiranjeevi resigned following his election to the Rajya Sabha. The by-election to Nellore Lok Sabha constituency will also be held along with the 18 assembly by-polls.
