About 2009 Maharashtra Assembly elections

The process of filing of nominations began on September 18, 2009. Maharashtra has a 288-member assembly with 29 seats being reserved for Scheduled Castes and another 25 for Scheduled Tribes. About 7.5 crore voters will select their representatives for the Maharashtra Assembly. 3,559 contestants including 211 women and 1,820 Independents are in the fray. Most of the Independent candidates are rebels from the Congress, the Nationalist Congress Party and other parties.

The polling took place on October 13, 2009. The counting was held on October 22, 2009. The Congress party won the election and has decided to retain Ashok Chavan as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra.

Shiv Sena - BJP Alliance

Shiv Sena took Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as its alliance during the elections. According to the seat-sharing formula announced on September 19, 2009, Shiv Sena will contest 169 of the 288 Assembly seats, while the BJP will contest from the other 119. Leaders of the parties expressed confidence about victory in the assembly polls. Poonam Mahajan, daughter of Pramod Mahajan is contesting from Ghatkopar West. The Sena-BJP seat-sharing agreement came a week after the Third Front announced its plan to contest 200 seats.
