About 2009 Jharkhand Assembly Elections

The Election Commission of India (ECI) on October 23, 2009 has announced a five-phase election schedule for the Jharkhand Assembly. The elections will be held from November 27, 2009 to December 18, 2009. Presently, Jharkhand is under president rule, after its assembly was suspended following the defeat of Chief Minister Sibu Soren in a bye-election.

First phase elections

The notification for the election will be issued on November 3, 2009. The nominations can be filed till November 10, 2009. The scrutiny of nomination will be held on November 11, 2009. The polling will be held on November 27, 2009. 30 constituencies will go for voting during this phase. On October 26, 2009, Muslim groups and political parties in Jharkhand have requested the Election Commission of India (ECI) to change the date of the poll from November 27, citing Bakr-Eid festival as the reason.

The campaigning for the first phase of the five-phased polling for the Jharkhand Assembly comes to an end on the evening of Monday, November 23, 2009. ANI

The Jharkhand Police here have foiled a Maoist attempt to disrupt the Assembly polls as they have arrested three people with electronic material used in landmine plants.

Second phase elections

The notification for the election will be issued on November 7, 2009. The nominations can be filed till November 14, 2009. The scrutiny of nomination will be held on November 16, 2009. The polling will be held on December 2, 2009. 15 constituencies will go to poll in this phase.

Third phase elections

The notification for the election will be issued on November 13, 2009. The nominations can be filed till November 20, 2009. The scrutiny of nomination will be held on November 21, 2009. The polling will be held on December 8, 2009. 7 seats will vote for polls during this phase.

Fourth phase elections

The notification for the election will be issued on November 17, 2009. The nominations can be filed till November 24, 2009. The scrutiny of nomination will be held on November 25, 2009. The polling will be held on December 12, 2009. 14 constituencies will vote in the fourth phase.

Fifth phase elections

The notification for the election will be issued on November 24, 2009. The nominations can be filed till December 1, 2009. The scrutiny of nomination will be held on December 4, 2009. The polling will be held on December 18, 2009. 15 constituencies will vote in the fifth phase.

Counting phase

Counting will be held on December 23, 2009.

Other related information

In September 09, Rashtriya Janata Dal chief Lalu Prasad Yadav called on Congress Party President Sonia Gandhi to hold talks on possibilities for forming an alliance between the parties for the elections. This move happened despite Congress having entered into an alliance with the Shibu Soren led Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), dumping the RJD in the 2009 Lok Sabha Elections in Jharkhand.
