2009 Haryana Assembly Elections

About 2009 Haryana Assembly Elections

Election process

About 1.3 crore voted and selected their representatives for the 90 assembly seats in Haryana Assembly. The election was held on October 13, 2009. The state witnesses a triangular contest mainly between the Congress, the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) and the BJP. The BJP-INLD alliance had swept the 1999 assembly polls in Haryana and ruled the state for five years. But in the 2005 elections, INLD lost its majority, winning just nine. Congress is on a high after fairly a good performance in April-May general elections.

On October 6, 2009, BJP leader LK Advani campaigned in Haryana for assembly polls.

Election results

The Congress Party emerged victorious in the assembly elections and has added salt to opposition wounds. Upbeat party supporters danced and celebrated as soon as they heard of the poll result. The Congress Party got all set to retain power for the second consecutive term.

Government formation process

On October 23, 2009, the party claimed to have completed the number deficit by garnering unconditional support of seven Independent MLAs. The Haryana Pradesh Congress Committee (HPCC) president Phool Chand Maullana met state Governor Jagannath Pahadia and staked a claim to form the next government in the state. Meanwhile, Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda met Congress President Sonia Gandhi to discuss the state leadership issue. The Congress party has decided to retain Hooda as the Chief Minister of Haryana.
