Yoani Maria Sanchez Cordero is a Cuban blogger. She achieved international fame for her critical portrayal of life in Cuba under its current government. Yonani Sanchez also won multiple international awards.

October 2012 - Detention and Release

The Cuban authorities has detained Yoani Sanchez on the even of a Spanish activist Angel Carromero's high-profile manslaughter trial in the eastern city of Bayamo. Yoani along with her husband Reinaldo Escobar and their driver were taken into custody, along with six other local dissidents on 4 October 2012. They were released the next day on 5 October 2012.

According to Yoani, they were stopped by state security agents after they arrived in Bayamo late Thursday afternoon. They were taken to a Ministry of interior facility and were separated and treated roughly in the beginning. The state agents wanted to remove her clothes which she refused to allow them to do so. The agents became more cordial later and were questioned for hours. She was threatened with criminal charges. On 5 October, they were driven back to their Havana home, which they reached at around 9 p.m.

Government-linked blogger Yohandry Fontana said that Yonai was detained because she had gone to Bayamo with the intent of creating provocation at the trial of Spaniard Angel Carromero.
