Swami Agnivesh is a social activist. He is also a peace negotiator between the Indian Government and the Maoists and a social activist.

On August 20, 2010, a day after Maoist leader Koteshwar Rao alias Kishenji said they are ready to observe a three-month ceasefire for talks, Swami Agnivesh has said Kishenji should come forward with a concrete step, not only public statements.

On February 17, 2011 Swami Agnivesh appealed to the Maoists not to cause any bodily harm to R Vineel Krishna, the abducted District Collector of Odisha's Malkangiri District.

Swami Agnivesh was manhandled in Bhopal on 30 November 2012 for his alleged derogatory remarks against God Shiva. The incident took place after a programme to launch the Maila Mukti Yatra in which Union Minister Jairam Ramesh and Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan particpated.
