Nalini Sriharan (aka: Sriharan) is in jail for her involvement in the assassination of former Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi in May 1991.

Hunger strike demanding her release

In September 09, she started an indefinite hunger strike demanding her release from the Central Jail at Vellore in Tamil Nadu where she is lodged. Nalini says she is eligible for release since 2005. She had filed a revised petition before the Madras High Court seeking her premature release. The court had ordered the government to constitute a new advisory committee to consider her release which was not formed. She had also sought release saying that she had spent 18 years more than the mandatory maximum 14 years in jail. She ended her fast on September 23, 2009, in two-days, after prison officials told her to do so and assured her that her plea would be considered as per law.

Tamil Nadu Government rejects her plea

Sriharan had smiles on her face after reports in January 2010 suggested that she may be released prematurely. The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi, in February 2010, clarified that his No unilateral decision on releasing Nalini, says Karunanidhi
government will not take any unilateral decision over her release. The Govt. sought two weeeks time to announce its decision.

At the end of March 2010, the Tamil Nadu Government accepted the recommendations of the Prison Advisory Board to refuse premature release of Nalini Sriharan. Reports suggested that Nalini will move to the Madras High Court challenging the decision. However, the Madras high court on April 6, 2010 dismissed her plea for her early release.
