Gary McKinnon

Gary McKinnon is a computer hacker based in the UK. He gained prominence for hacking into the computers at NASA and the Pentagon of the United States.

Hacking into NASA and Pentagon

McKinnon admitted to breaking into the computers of NASA and the Pentagon and maintained that he accessed them to find out if the U.S.government was covering up the existence of UFOs. The hacking is said to be one of the biggest military computer hacking of all time, as per the U.S. government.

According to the U.S. government, McKinnon accessed 97 computers from his home in London for a year starting in March 2001. His hacking attempts have costed the government about $1 million.


The U.S. government has accused McKinnon of hacking into the following networks.

  • military, NASA and civilian networks
  • the Pentagon
  • Fort Benning, Georgia
  • Fort Meade, Maryland
  • the Earle Naval Weapons Station in Colts Neck, New Jersey
  • the Johnson Space Center in Houston

Extradition Battle

Gary McKinnon is wanted in the US and is facing a extradition battle.

On October 16, 2012 the United Kingdom has blocked the extradition of Gary McKinnon to the United States. The decision no to extradite him was taken considering his Asperger syndrome and depressive illness. UK Home Secretary Theresa May said the UK director of public prosecutions will now see if McKinnon will face a trial in the UK Court.

McKinnon's lawyer is Karen Todner. Reacting to the decision of UK blocking the extradition attempt, she expressed delight by posting on Twitter, "delighted by Home Secretary's decision not to extradite Gary McKinnon. The right result after all these years."
