Swami Ramdev, popular as Baba Ramdev is a Hindu swami and a yoga guru. He is a social activist and has staged protests against corruption in the country.

Swami Shankar Dev is his mentor.

Baba Ramdev is mainly fighting to bring the black money stashed abroad by Indians back to the country.

Against Homosexuality

Baba Ramdev filed a special leave petition before the Supreme court on Delhi High Courts ruling to legalize gay sex. Ramdev says homosexuality a 'disease' and he can cure it through yoga. He says it is a virus and once it effects the person can go no where. In July 09, he commented that actress such as Celina Jaitley know nothing about Bhartiya sanskriti because they always stay away from parents and have no moral.

Campaign against Black Money

In 2012, Baba Ramdev has lead a campaign against black money.

On 17 May 2012, the Income Tax Department said that the trusts owned by Baba Ramdev owed Rs. 58 crore in taxes against their income. Though, his trusts were initially exempted from paying taxes due to their claims being a charitable organization, a new audit concluded that the sale of ayurvedic medicines must be treated as a commercial venture. The trust said that they will challenge the I-T notice.

Swadeshi movement

Baba Ramdev has launched the Swadeshi movement on 2 Oct 2012, protesting against the government’s decision to allow Foreign Direct Investment in retail. He burnt a bonfire of foreign clothes at Haridwar. The agitation is launched in 650 villages across the country and is aimed to continue till 2014. Baba Ramdev’s Swabhiman Trust has called on the people of the country to stop corrupt forces and instead vote honest candidates. They appealed the people to boycott foreign goods.

Patanjali Noodles

In 2015, Baba Ramdev has launched Patanjali Noodles. In November 2015, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has said that the Patanajali Noodles is not approved by it and can't be sold. On 19 Nov, Baba Ramdev denied the claim and said that the Noodles have got the approval of FSSAI and said that those who are doing contract manufacturing for them have obtained the license as well as the manufacturing license.

2014 Elections

Baba Ramdev has offered his backing to the Bharatiya Janata Party in the 2014 elections.

Controversial Remarks

Baba Ramdev allegedly made a controversial remark at a press conference in Lucknow on April 25, 2014. Referring to Rahul Gandhi reaching out to dalits, Ramdev is quoted to have said "He goes to Dalits' houses for honeymoon and picnic. Had he married a Dalit girl, then his luck could have clicked and he would have become the Prime Minister." The remarks caused a huge uproar from Congress party and dalit organizations. The BJP defended Baba Ramdev saying that his remarks were misconstrued. Baba Ramdev apologised for the remarks later saying that he did not mean to insult Rahul Gandhi or Dalits and that he regrets the remarks. An FIR was filed under Section 171G by Uttar Pradesh police on April 26, 2014.

Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati threatened a nation-wide agitation if Baba Ramdev was not booked under SC/ST Act and put behind bars. The National Commission for Scheduled Castes asked the Director General of Police of Uttar Pradesh to inform whether action had been taken or planned against Ramdev.
