Anna Hazare

Kisan Baburao Hazare, popularly known as Anna Hazare is an Indian social activist. He is a prominent activist in the 2011 Indian anti-corruption movement and is known for using nonviolent methods following the teachings of Mahatma Gandhi.

Anna Hazare was born on June 15, 1937 in Bhingar. His family later moved to their ancestral village of Ralegan Siddhi. Anna Hazare was recruited in the Indian Army in April 1963 and participated in the Indo-China War of 1962, during which he was posted at the border in the Khem Karan sector. He was honorably discharged from the Indian Army in 1975 after completing 12 years of service.

Later, he took up the development of Ralegan Siddhi. Hazare and his youth group decided to take up the issue of alcoholism as a means to drive a process of reform. He established the Grain bank near a temple in 1980. Anna Hazare launched the 'Bhrashtachar Virodhi Jan Aandolan', a popular movement to fight against corruption.

Fight against Corruption

Anna Hazare has staged several protests and hunger strikes in his effort for the Jan Lokpal Bill. However, all of his indefinite hunger strikes had to be called off at because of assurances from the government. He staged an indefinite hunger strike in August 2012 and called off and indicated that forming a political party is the alternative in their fight against corruption.

He later called off plans to form a political party and said that he would tour the country extensively and would appeal to the people to vote against the Congress.

On September 9, 2012 Hazare released a statement appealing to the people of the country to vote for the right candidate. He called on the youth of the country to ensure 90 plus voting in elections and also released a six-point action plan.

Slams Government's decision on FDI

Anti-corruption crusader Anna Hazare slammed the UPA Government’s decision on FDI in retail sector. “The ruling party and some others say that FDI will change the economic situation while opposition says it is harmful for the country. Both the sides are trying to cut each other keeping 2014 elections in mind”, he wrote on his blog on September 16, 2012. He expressed doubt on whether the black money of Indians stashed abroad is routed back to India in the form of FDI.

Hazare said that no parties are serious in curbing the corruption and the recent disclosure about donations in which they have used a clause to hide the names of donors from public showed their intentions. He stressed the importance of sending good candidates to Parliament who will fight for a strong Lokpal and poll reforms.

Hazare would support Kejriwal's party if he selects proper candidates

Anna Hazare met RTI activist Vishwambhar Choudhary and social worker and former bureaucrat Avinash Dharmadhikar in Pune. Speaking to reporters, Hazare said that his decision not to form a political party would not mean a split with Arvind Kejriwal. He said, "I have decided for myself not to form a political party or fight elections. But if Arvind floats one, it would mean taking a different path with the same goal of corruption free India." Hazare would support Kejriwal's candidate if he fields a proper candidate.

Hazare and Kejriwal part ways

On September 19, 2012 Anna Hazare and Arvind Kejriwal parted ways over the issue of forming a political party. Hazare is against following the political path and contesting the election, while Kejriwal felt that a political party is the best option to fight corruption.

Visit to Delhi

Anna Hazare met his supporters in New Delhi on 30 Sep 2012 to chalk out his future course of action. Hazare reiterated his anti-stance on politics saying that it is dirty and is not the right way to fight against corruption. This is Hazare's first visit to the capital after he parted ways with Arvind Kejriwal. Hazare met Medha Patkar, Dr Sunilam and others. He would return to Ralegan Siddhi on October 1, 2012.

Ideology of Anti-Corruption Movement

Anna Hazare said that anti-corruption activists need to be trained in the ideology of the movement. He proposed a 3-4 day training camp at Ralegan Siddhi.



October 6, 2012: Anti-Corruption crusader Anna Hazare has called for a judicial probe into Robert Vadra's assets. He said, "If the allegations are wrong then why is there no judicial probe. I would say let there be judicial probe and then facts will come out. If allegations leveled by Arvind are false, then order a probe and let the facts speak. If the allegations are false, file a case aganist Arvind Kejriwal."
